Welcome to W.Media’s Chennai Cloud & Data Center Convention 2024!
Chennai continues to grow as a hub city for data centres in the Asia Pacific and to consolidate its position as one of India’s three largest data centre locations. It shares a number of driving factors with other key markets in India – the numbers of organisations and individuals embarking on their digital journey, the roll-out of new cloud regions and the emerging requirements associated with AI and ML. The local ecosystem – data centre and cloud providers, manufacturers and vendors, consultants and educators – is evolving to supply and enable that journey. The ongoing Digital India programme continues to create a broad level of support and awareness on a national basis and continuing State Government support and initiatives will keep Tamil Nadu at the forefront of these trends.
Chennai and Tamil Nadu will represent a key focus for digital interests. Major providers continue to invest in the region, and investments are being made (and considered) into larger campus-style data centre developments which offer the necessary capacity for future growth. Tamil Nadu’s economic success is based on a heritage of commerce, manufacturing and industry and this means that different variants of digital infrastructure will play a role in meeting future local requirements. The growing relationship with nations in South East Asia will also consolidate Chennai’s role as a key landing point for cables to and from those nations.
The W.Media Convention will look closely at how data centres and cloud in Chennai are moving forward, at their role in the State’s growth and also at the resources required to build and operate the necessary infrastructure moving forward.
The Welcome Address will introduce the key market themes that have shaped the programme for this convention as well as key information to help you make the most of your day.
How will enterprise and colocation data centres and cloud providers need to adapt to Tamil Nadu’s fast-moving economic, commercial and social environment? How can the State’s digital infrastructure colocation and data center services evolve to help usher in the era of digital transformation? How will colocation, managed service and cloud providers need to adapt to their central role in this process? What will be the investment priorities in order to develop and maintain the necessary levels of service and infrastructure? How will this impact both providers and clients?
The opening panel will engage the expertise and insights of the data centre CEOs and owners who have honoured us by joining this panel. We ask them to consider whether it is possible to plan across the whole future life of a data centre (or is that a legacy idea?).
The life of the data centre is marked by the continual need to review performance, to meet upgraded server needs with higher-spec facility equipment while all the time extending or changing the overall configuration of the racks within the data centre. Now, the broad rules of how often changes are made and the scope of those changes appear to be disrupted by the scope of the increases in demand. Analysing how and why the data centre life cycle is changing will add further insight into your digital infrastructure strategy.
The principle of scalability has traditionally been a characteristic associated with the largest, hyperscale data centers – how has it impacted how data centers are being designed and operated across Tamil Nadu? Which aspects of hyperscale design, construction and operation should be looked at when applying the principle of scale more widely?
Demand for data centre services in Chennai will be driven by the deployment of AI/ML among local organisations and also by the evolution of quantum computing. These technologies will act as keys to future demand trends but also as solutions in meeting that demand as digital technologies play a greater and more active role in data centre operation, management and ultimately strategy as well.
As edge computing matures, so the number of edge-based services and delivery models available to businesses increases. In an evolving marketplace, this may make decision making in relation to edge computing options more complicated. Concerns about rolling edge out may continue in terms of cost, service levels, control and visibility. What are the key questions to be asked when thinking about an active edge deployment and how do you make best use of the answers?
Power into data centers is moving away from reliance on fossil fuels delivered via a central grid. Generation is becoming more localized and renewable sources of energy are now gaining increased traction. How are data centers in Tamil Nadu progressing along this path, what is driving them in this direction and what might assist them in ‘going renewable’?
Digital inclusion is increasingly based on access and the accelerating advances of both wireless standards and wireless network protocols may mean both inclusion and exclusion. How will future trends in the reach of networks and the evolution of connectivity technologies in terms of bandwidth, speed and latency impact the requirements and design of local data centres?
The cooling challenge is one of the longest established and most intractable in the data centre universe – greater demand leads to higher densities which in turn require more cooling and heat removal. Since cooling has traditionally been associated with the greatest demand for power other than the IT equipment in a data centre how can cooling management based on requirement play a greater role in managing cooling effectively?
What currently is the impact of the ‘skills gap’ on Chennai’s data centres? Where is it most acute? How effectively are automation, software and tech being adopted into local data centers? Is tech making up the skills shortfall? Or is it simply shifting it?
What is the current view of data centers in southern India among the investment community? What are the factors influencing this view? Which locations regionally and in the Asia Pacific are attracting interest? Why? What types of project? What is the view of Chennai as a destination for future industry investment?
